If you are a Mac user, I’m sure you heard about Alfred, it’s, as far as I know the best launcher. Alfred will speed up your work and make your mouse kind of useless.
Alfred has also a great feature, the extensions. You first need to buy a powerpack and then you can start to write them.
I wrote an extension that gets your connection speed and displays it using Growl.

To install it, just double-click on the file, and to run it type in Alfred:
speed
And that’s it.
Enjoy.

Could this Alfred extension be modified to choose the closest Speed Test server by ping or IP address?

Hi,
I really love this extension, but I was curious: is there a way that I con modify this extension to give me the speed results in, say, megabytes per second, instead of kilobits per second? If so, how can I do that?
Thank you very much!

The extension unfortunately did not work for me, perhaps because I am using Growl 1.3.3?

Hi Ben.
Awesome job on this extension. I have noticed however that the speed is never above 17 Mb. Is it because the script is partially running on your server ?
I often deal with 100 Mb/s connexion, and the results are not accurate in that case.
Is there a workaround ?
Anyway thanks for your work. :)

I think my server cannot handle a 100mbit/s connection. I’ve tried the script only with my home connection (20 mbps). I’ll try it from my university where speed is also 100mbps.
